Intern - Academy Equipment/Operations (Fall/Winter 2014) - D.C. United (Washington, DC)


D.C. United is seeking a highly motivated candidate to take on the role of Youth Academy Equipment/Operations for Fall/Winter 2014(August-Mid November).  The candidate will assist the Academy Equipment Manager and Academy Manager with all equipment needs as well as helping in an Operations/Administration capacity.




Essential Functions (Youth Academy):

·         Manage, inventory, and account for all team equipment usage

·         Setup and breakdown of training equipment and field

·         Distribution and laundering of all team game gear

·         Packing of equipment for away games/travel

·         Assist with Labor Day Tournament at Morven Park (Aug 29th – Sept. 1st)


Supportive Functions (Operations/Admin):

·         Assist Academy Manager with meal set-up for road trips

·         Assist with miscellaneous administration tasks that arise for Youth Academy



·         College degree/in process in a related field preferred, but not required

·         Prior experience in the field of equipment management, whether professional or at the collegiate level, preferred, but not required

·         Knowledge of soccer is preferred, but not required



The ideal candidate will need to be available to work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends.  Also, there may be the possibility of travel to nearby/local games/practices.

Intern - Community Relations (Fall 2014) - D.C. United (Washington, DC)


Position Overview:

Assist the D.C. United community relations department with running United’s community development efforts- including working on community programs, executing donations, managing the team’s fan mail, and more. Additionally, the Intern will help coordinate and execute programs and fundraising events for D.C. United’s non-profit arm, United for DC.   




Essential Duties:

Assist with Community Relations department programs and initiatives

  • Assist with local D.C. United community initiatives/events
  • Assist with the development and execution of community programming which includes: United Drives, Good Sport and Community Stars initiatives.
  • Facilitate the team’s in-kind donation practice.
  • Assist with social media, communications and marketing for community relations initiatives.
  • Assist with game-day duties including managing various booths associated with the department’s initiatives and programs. 
  • May assist with scheduling and coordination of player appearances


Assist with United for DC programs and fundraisers

  • Help coordinate the charity’s various programs including: Kicks for Kids and United Reads.
  • Facilitate fundraising activities such as raffles and auctions.
  • Assist with charity’s social media, communications, and marketing.
  • Organize material for United Soccer Club coach’s training.
  • Assist with the coordination and implementation of United Soccer Club events, practices and games.
  • Make site visits to United Soccer Club practices
  • Fill in as United Soccer Club coach or referee (when necessary and appropriate).
  • Coordinate programmatic volunteers.


Provide administrative support for both respective job function and departmental needs

  • Organize and maintain departmental databases.
  • Research information and routine problem solving.
  • Reception coverage.
  • Mascot duties (when necessary and appropriate).
  • Assisting in any other areas as needed.


TIME COMMITTMENT: 15-20 hours/week, September - December 2014

Required Knowledge/Skills/Qualities:

  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently.
  • Strong writing and verbal communications skills.
  • Able to work weeknights, weekends and holidays.
  • Detail oriented with strong follow-up skills.
  • Applicants available to commit full-time are preferred, but part-time candidates will also be considered.
  • Valid drivers license.

Intern - Corporate Partnerships (FALL 2014) - D.C. United (Washington, DC)


The Sponsorship Intern will work closely, alongside front-office staff, on the relationships involving D.C. United's official sponsors.  Interns will gain hands-on experience in a professional setting while learning about the sport industry work environment and polishing skills learned in class.  Sponsorship Interns will learn to communicate with sponsors, apply creative skills, learn the logistics and components of event planning as well as learning styles/formats of professional business meetings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (including but not limited to the following):

- Organization of Sponsored Elements

- Facilitation of game day programs and half-time events

- Production of event and match summaries

- Sponsorship research


Candidates for this internship should be self-starters, detail oriented, trustworthy and organized with strong written and verbal communication skills.  Candidates should also have a full time commitment on days available and a flexible schedule.  Interns will be asked to work occasionally on weeknights and weekends.

Internships: Marketing
Intern - Marketing (FALL 2014) - D.C. United (Washington, DC)

We are looking for students who are interested in gaining experience in grassroots marketing, event management, game day operations and day-to-day business operations. Students who are available at least 30 hours/week for 3-4 months are preferred. D.C. United accepts a limited number of interns to ensure that interns gain valuable work experience.


Essential Functions:

The primary responsibility is to provide weekday and game day assistance to the Marketing Department. Interns will be expected to assist with the following:

  • Lead-generation on game days and at grassroots events
  • Company vehicle maintenance
  • Collateral and premium item inventory
  • Mascot program
  • Lot 8 tailgate
  • Game-specific ticket promotions
  • Game day operations responsibilities, which includes working all weekend and weeknight games. Game day duties may include working on promotions, customer service, stadium set-up and teardown
  • Some responsibilities will include clerical work such as filing, data entry, copying and correspondence.


Supportive Functions:

In addition to performance of the essential functions, this position may be required to assist other departments with various projects. Interaction with other departments is highly encouraged as we aim to provide the most comprehensive learning experience for interns.
